“Lupe & Sirena” by Alma Lopez; a queering of Mexican cultural symbols

This project explores queering the history and semiotics of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego on Tepeyac hill in 1531. This apparition would come to be known as Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe) and is revered within Latine culture and religious life.

The image to the left is from the collection Lupe & Sirena by artist Alma Lopez who describes the collection as “Cultural icons (such as the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Mexican Loteria's Sirena and other legends) filtered through a queer Chicana feminist lens.”
